Genital warts, also called venereal warts, are caused by HPV virus and affect the top layer of the skin around the genital area. This type of virus is spread only through sexual contact with an infected person. In all cases of suspected or confirmed genital warts, you really should see a doctor. Genital warts can appear in tiny clusters of bumps and small raised growths or can spread into a large area of the penis or the female genital area. Although genital warts are very unsightly, they are not really dangerous. In fact, most warts will disappear without treatment. The wart should drop off after a few days.

If the warts started to spread uncontrollably and have developed into fleshy, small raised growth on a large portion of the genital area, you'd better see a doctor at once. In most cases, doctors will treat the genital warts with imiquimod, a form of topical cream that is applied directly to the affected area. Some doctors will use podophyllin anti-mitotic solution.
