How to secure new stair treads on top of old treads?

We tore out the carpet and found the cheapest ugliest treads underneath. I have already cut, stained, and poly'd the new ones to be attached on them. But how best to secure them?- adhesive? adhesive AND screws? only screws?

For one thing you are going to be breaking a cardinal rule for carpenters. Keep the distance on the stair risers the same from top to bottom of stairs. By adding a layer to the existing your top riser is going to be less and your bottom riser is going to be more or higher. This could cause someone to fall as your mind gets set to the pattern of the riser height. You don't say what the new treads are or how thick. If they are 1/2" or less I would use liquid nails Heavy duty. If thicker Same only use a good wood screw - countersink and use plugs on top of screws and sand down flush.
