Wood VS. metal picture frames. Framing Solutions for Photographers and Artists

Picture framing kits are one easy way to provide a home for your photographic or other two dimensional artworks. There are many good reasons why you don’t want to simply tack your pictures to the wall, and aesthetics are only one part of it. Without good picture or photography frames, your carefully crafted image will be exposed to the ravages of humidity, airborne pollution and ultraviolet light – with disastrous results. Picture framing kits not only look nice; they help to preserve your work.

What You’ll Need

The great thing about many picture framing kits is that for the most part, you won’t need much in the way of tools other than a good razor or hobby knife (such as an X-Acto™ knife). At a minimum, you’ll need the following framing and matting supplies:

• framing and matting supplies

• Some type of non-porous barrier material

• Back and window mat material

• Photographic paper adhesive or hinges/photo corners

• Glazing (glass or acrylic)

• The frame proper

What types of ready made picture frames are best? That depends on several issues, namely (A) your budget, (B) the type of photo or painting, (C) the décor of the room in which the artifact is to be displayed, and (D) your own personal preference. Wood picture frames are highly attractive and appropriate for almost any kind of image. They can also be very expensive, and depending on the décor of the room in which the artifact is to be displayed, finding just the right selection among available wood picture frames can be challenging.

Metal picture frames appeal to some people, and in fact can enhance the display of modern art and/or contemporary urban or abstract landscapes. These come in a wide range of prices, and generally may be less expensive than wood picture frames.

Custom Picture Frames

You won’t generally find these included in picture framing kits, since they are indeed “custom made” to order. However, if your painting or photo prints are of non-standard sizes, it may be necessary to order custom picture frames – or create your own. Advanced picture framing kits sometimes include the kinds of tools you’ll need to create your own custom picture frames, but doing this requires a certain amount of skill.

The Cost

Again, there is a lot of variation here; prices on picture framing kits can range from $30 to $150. Again, this depends on the quality and the kinds of materials and tools that are included. A good rule of thumb when shopping for framing and matting supplies is to purchase the best picture framing kits you can afford.

how to remove self adhesive posters from my wooden cupboard door?

I stuck some self-sticking posters of disney cartoon characters on my cupboard-made of wood. Now these stickers won't come off. I tried scratching 'em off but that is ruining the wood'd polish.

Also tell me how to get rid of such posters from glass, or mirror..please.

First heat them gently with a hair dryer. This will often soften the adhesive enough they'll usually peel right off. If there is any residue, clean it up with Goo-Gone. Let the Goo-Gone dwell for a couple minutes and let it do its job before wiping.

Triolyse Adhesive $19.95 This UV glue is cured with an activator instead of an expensive UV light. This makes it ideal for gluing glass to glass, even opaques, which a UV light glue can and 39;t cure. It is great for glass to glass fusing, mosaics, three-dimensional stained glass and jewelry, among other applications. In addition, it and 39;s also well suited for gluing metal to glass (like jewelry findings) with fast and easy cleanup. You can even use Triolyse with stone such as granite or marble. Package includes 14ml of activator and 10ml of adhesive. Using Triolyse is Easy. Below are some helpful hints for Triolyse from Delphi guest instructor Cheryl Frech 1. Humidity makes a difference. If you and 39;re working in a humid environment, bake your glass and bails in an oven at about 200 - 250 degrees F for 20 to 30 minutes before beginning. 2. Use a diamond engraver point on a rotary tool or glass engraver to rough the surface up where you will be applying glue. Do this to your glass, and to any portion of the finding that will be covered by the glass. 3. Clean both surfaces well with rubbing alcohol. 91% Isopropyl Alcohol will provide the best results. 4. Apply a small amount of the activator to both surfaces, then wait at least 15 seconds, but no more than 4 hours to proceed. 5. Apply enough adhesive to evenly coat the bail. 6. Position the bail on the glass and press pieces firmly together for about 15-30 seconds to create a bond. 7. Within 2 minutes, clean away excess adhesive and activator with a soft cloth and rubbing alcohol. 8. The adhesive fully cures after six hours (or as quickly as 30 minutes if you heat the parts to 150F). Jewelry artists, watch a quick online video to see how easy it is to secure your bails in place with Triolyse. The projects in these pictures were all done in a one-day class at the Glass Craft and Bead Expo in Las Vegas. Students were asked to bring a fused element that we would convert into a sculpture, or create a base that will enhance their work. We can see from these examples that the students quickly understood the 3 dimensional possibilities of this versatile glue. If there is any moisture in the wood clay, the heat of firing will convert it to steam which can split the metal clay layer as it escapes. Storage The unused portion of the wood clay should be wrapped tightly in plastic wrap and then stored in a zip-lock plastic bag. It can be softened slightly by adding water but is best kept moist in a tightly sealed bag. Firing the material does produce some smoke.
