will a 20" hood lamp with only incandescent bulbs heat a 55 gal tank?

I have a 4' ball python and I need a new heat lamp for him. I don't like dome lamps and I don't need fluorescent capabilities. Will a 20" hood lamp using a 150 watt day light and 100 watt night light keep his 55 gal tank heated? I also have an adhesive heat pad on the side of his tank.

Winged Wolf- what is the best way to keep the humidity level up? Would another heating pad keep him warm enough? I've heard it is unsafe to have heating pads on the bottoms of tanks bc the snake could burn himself...?

Don't use heat lamps on a tank for a ball python--it will make keeping the humidity levels up pretty much impossible. Add a second, larger heat pad underneath the warm side of the tank. It is important that the air temperature in the tank stay at 80F, and the hot spot should be no more than 95F.

Humidity must be at 60%--it cannot be overstressed how crucial this is for good health. Ball pythons quickly dehydrate when humidity is low, which causes bad sheds and compromises their respiratory system, as well as affecting overall health. Unless your house is at that humidity level, you'll probably have to cover all but an inch of the screen top with plastic wrap.

If you still have problems with the temps, try using foam insulation board on 3 sides of the tank (or 2 sides, since you said you put a heat pad on one).

A glass tank is really an awkward enclosure for a ball python. If you just aren't having luck with it, switch to a reptile cage. Animal Plastics, Vision, and BoaPhile are a few companies that make reptile cages.
