Dental Veneers

A dental veneer is a thin layer of a restorative material such as porcelain that is placed over the tooth. It is usually used to improve the aesthetics of teeth such as discoloration but they are also used for protecting a damaged tooths surface. The two main materials that are used for making veneers are synthetic composite resins and porcelain. Composite veneers can be placed directly on a tooth and then built up as well as constructed by a dental technician and then adhered to the tooth (typicaly with a resin cement such as Panavia) porcelain on the other hand can only be pre fabricated and then fitted to the tooth.

Charles Pincus a Californian dentist invented dental veneers but at the time they were not as permanent as they are now due to being held on by denture adhesive. As a result they weren't very useful to many people but actors found them useful in changing the appearance of their teeth temporarily. Veneers were further developed in 1982 by Simonsen and Calamia who discovered that a better bond strength could be achieved by using composite resins and porcelain. Todays adhesives allow for the veneers to stay in place for as long as 10-30 years.

Composite veneers are gaining in popularity as they are easy to repair (porcelain veneers have potential to crack). Placing several veneers over teeth is common as it is easier to match the shade of the veneer to another veneer then it is to the teeth.

Some veneers require the surface of the tooth to be altered in order to fit the veneer but there are others availible that are simply placed over the tooth. This kind of treatment is less invasive and requires little or no anesthetic. However they can often appear bulky and unnatural unless a very thin material is used.

People with minor teeth alignment problems can often use veneers instead of orthodontics but this depends on the amount of malposition of the teeth, if this is a problem they can be used in combination with orthodontics. The dentist fitting the veneers must be very careful not to make them to big as this can lead to the veneers fracturing and chipping when the wearer eats or accidently smacks their teeth together.

There are many people with spaces in between their teeth due to having small teeth that can not be closed easily by orthodontics. Others have worn teeth that give them an aged appearance and others have crooked misaligned teeth. Using multiple veneers can disguise these cosmetic problems closing the spaces between the teeth lengthening worn teeth and give an even clean white color, shape and make them appear straight.
