Preservation of Art

Art, much like your body, will wither if you don’t take pains to preserve it from the vagaries of nature. It is vulnerable to much the same things as your body – damage from light, humidity and air. The damages to an oil painting are different from those suffered by a photograph or say, a sculpture. But with proper care, these damages can be prevented, or rectified. Caution: It is recommended that you let your gallery or other experts help you preserve your art. We list some of the problems you might encounter – in case you observe any of these, contact your Online Art Gallery India or an expert immediately.

Problem #1: Reddish brown spots are beginning to appear on my photographs.

Causes: This is called ‘Foxing’ and is caused by rust or humidity.

Solution: Ensure that the artwork is stored in a clean, dry place.

Problem #2: What is that powdery substance that has appeared on the painting/photograph?

Causes: Your painting/photograph has encountered fungus. Check if the wall on which it is hung has retained moisture. In addition, it could be possible that there is excessive humidity (over 60 per cent) in the air and not enough ventilation. Do check if the room is too prone to dust; it could give birth to fungus.

Solution: This is rather dangerous, since in oil paintings, you will probably notice the fungus after it has damaged the back. Your gallery will treat the painting/photograph by fumigating it, but it is up to you to ensure that you store it in a clean, dry and dust-free environment.

Problem #3: The paint on my painting is beginning to flake off.

Causes: Occasionally, the paint or ink detaches from the paper. This could be due to fluctuations in humidity and temperature - the artwork might have expanded or contracted, though imperceptible to the human eye, causing the paint to come off. It could also happen that the artist did not mix or choose his paints correctly.

Solution: This requires immediate expert attention. Contact your gallery as soon as possible.

Problem #4: My photograph now looks yellow. It even has some stains.

Causes: Paper suffers discolouration due to excessive exposure to light. Alongside the yellowing, the paper could also become brittle and vulnerable to breaking. Also, you may have tried to paste the photograph somewhere, and contact with the acidic elements in the adhesive will have had an adverse effect on it.

Solution: It is recommended that you ensure there are no pollutants, cool temperature and regular humidity in the room where the photograph is stored.
Problem #5: My photograph looks as if someone had once spilt water on it.
Causes: In all likelihood, someone probably did spill water on it. Or perhaps, the framing of the photograph has little margin for natural expansion. And then, there’s the enemy of all art - humidity.

Solution: Ensure that your photograph has a clean, dry environ to be in.

Problem #6: My painting has suffered a tear.

Causes: Perhaps, you have not handled the painting properly. A painting could get torn due to neglect.

Solution: Your gallery will have to re-set the canvas. Do not, under any circumstances, attempt to repair the painting yourself by applying adhesive tapes or glue.

Problem #7: My paining does not look the same. The colours seem to have changed.

Causes: Sometimes, the varnish on a painting gets discoloured with time. You might notice a yellowish-brown or grey tint to the painting. In addition, over time, dust settles on the painting, making it look dull and old.

Solution: The gallery will, after conducting some tests, remove the old varnish. In the case of dust, your gallery will clean out the surface.

Problem #8: My painting seems to be coming off the canvas.

Causes: The artist may not have used a very strong fabric for the painting and over time, it loses its tenacity. In addition, it could also be that the canvas is stretched too much, which makes it come off at the edges.

Solution: The gallery or expert that you consult will go through an elaborate process of relining the canvas. The old fabric is removed, cleaned and reattached with the original fabric.

Problem #9: Silverfish have attacked my painting.

Causes: Silverfish and other insects like termites usually attack the wooden sides of the painting. Not only will they eat away at the sides, some insects will also leave spots on the surface that may be impossible to remove.

Solution: Keep your paintings protected and do a periodic check the way you check your cupboards. You do not want creepy crawlies to harm your artwork.
