The Benefits of Aluminum Etxrusion

In wide industries like aeronautics, automotive, construction and even advertising aluminum extrusions had been greatly used. Everywhere we look we can see examples of aluminum extrusions which include electronic components, computers, furniture, vehicle sub-assemblies, architectural structures and the list continues. Extrusion is a process wherein a metal is pressed in a die machine, heated and melted at nine thousand Fahrenheit or higher. The most common and most preferred metal for extrusion is the aluminum but why the aluminum?

This metal is the most preferred because of its excellent properties which will be simply presented in the following facts. Aluminum is one of the most abundant metals found on earth which then could be a good choice if you are looking for the least expensive among all other metals. With aluminum extrusion, there would be no worry for designers to compromise, just come up with their desired shape and design and you can have it. It only takes a good imagination and less work. It might be an inexpensive metal but it has a lot of features which makes it recommendable. Aluminum is just about one-third of the weight of brass, copper or steel so it would be very perfect for strong parts which need to be light. The metal possesses a very good thermal property which makes it so suitable for extrusion. It has an excellent heat conducting property and is almost equal with metal conductors like copper, gold and silver and is a good choice for heat shields.

Ever thought why a lot prefer aluminum among any other metals? It is because it too has a very high electrical conductivity. Though it is light it can produce twice the current you get from copper which is more expensive. Of course no one would opt to the more expensive choice. Aluminum extrusions have excellent corrosive-resistance property, they are coated by their own transparent film oxide and the color could be enhanced by chemical or electrochemical way. Since they can be formed so easily you can achieve the shape and design you wanted with less effort but with good results. Extruded aluminum can be joined so easily and does not need special and expensive joining tools. They can be joined with nuts and bolts, rivets, mechanical fasteners, welding, adhesive bonding and some other not too costly materials. Extruded aluminum usually comes in hollow, semi-hollow and solid shapes, having distinct features and uses.

To add more effect to the shapes and designs to the aluminum extrusion some finishing methods are applied. They are loxite; where the extruded aluminum is being polished to give a higher luster. Another way is through loxite gold wherein after polishing the extruded material is dyed gold. Third is mill brite where a chemical compound is applied to the extrusion to give a gold or bronze finishing. Buff brite uses mechanical brightening method and also uses gold and bronze for finishing. Painting and dying are two of the other ways. The process of extruding aluminum may sound complex to us but remember these things had been parts of our daily lives.

How to bond or glue aluminum to aluminum?

Do I need to solder? Should I use an adhesive? I am working on a school project.

Yes, using an industrial adhesive such as Westech Aerosol HSEA is as effective as welding or soldering but is very much easier. First, sand the surfaces of the aluminum and smoothen out the rough areas. Clean them with an alcohol and remove the dust. Then, spray the HSEA throughout the surface. Use a roller to apply uniform pressure. Wait until the glue dries for a few more minutes. Once it is completely dry, smoothen the surface. The best thing about Westech HSEA is that unlike other adhesive products, this is friendly to the environment. It does not contain chlorinated solvents and hazardous air pollutants which also make it safe to our health. I’ve been using this product in my car repair shop to fix fractures in tractor trailers as well as car bodies. Just make sure to read the instructions before starting the procedure.

Bonding Elastomers

Bonding Elastomers

$153

This review has been written as a practical approach to bonding various kinds of elastomers to substrates such as steel and plastics, as used in the manufacture of diverse products such as rubber covered rolls, urethane fork lift wheels, rubber lining for chemical storage or solid rocket motors, engine bushes and mounts, seals for transmissions, electrical power connectors and military tank track pads. There are over 20 kinds of elastomeric polymer each having unique physical and chemical resistance characteristics. Through compounding, a given elastomer’s performance can be enhanced but no single elastomer can be compounded to meet all applications. In the same manner, no single adhesive can provide the needed levels of adhesion and environmental resistance to all polymers. Even when bonding a particular elastomer, the adhesive of choice can vary depending upon the compounding of the rubber including the cure system, the environmental application of the bonded assembly, the substrate to which the rubber is going to be bonded, the moulding method and the geometry of the part. Other factors affecting adhesive selection might include colour, conductivity, and means of application. This review is based on the authors' years of experience working closely with end-use customers and offers a thorough overview of how to successfully bond rubber to a given substrate in the manufacture of quality rubber engineered components:.; substrate preparation; selection of adhesive; adhesive preparation; adhesive application; moulding conditions; testing and bond failure analysis; future trends. This review is supported by an indexed section containing several hundred key references and abstracts selected from the Polymer Library. Adhesive or glue is a compound in a liquid or semiliquid state that adheres or bonds items together. Adhesives may come from either natural or synthetic sources. Some modern adhesives are extremely strong, and are becoming increasingly important in modern construction and industry. The types of materials that can be bonded using adhesives are virtually limitless, but they are especially useful for bonding thin materials. Adhesives usually require a controlled temperature to cure or set. They can be electrically and thermally conductive or nonconductive. The earliest date for a simple glue is 200,000 BC and for a compound glue 70,000 BC. Practical Guide to Adhesive Bonding of Small Engineering Plastic and Rubber Parts

Practical Guide to Adhesive Bonding of Small Engineering Plastic and Rubber Parts

$125

Choosing the best adhesive grade for the joining of two plastics or elastomers for a production application can be an exacting design task. This is especially true when joining dissimilar materials and when bonding certain plastics. Adhesives can provide the optimum - indeed often the only - assembly method. However it is all too often that the adhesive is not fully considered at the design stage. This can result in much time and trouble for engineers to get from the prototype stage to full production. This Practical Guide discusses the adhesive bonding of 30 of the most commonly used generic families of thermoplastics and thermoset plastics as well as a number of commonly used rubbers and elastomers. This guide provides a full explanation of the cure mechanisms and discusses the performance benefits for four types of engineering adhesives (cyanoacrylates, epoxies, two-part acrylics and UV curing adhesives). There are also chapters on joint design, dispensing systems, the surface preparation for 'difficult' plastics and information on several other adhesive technologies. It will be of particular interest to all in industry bonding to metals, composites, wood and other rubbers. End-users and new product developers will benefit from the Practical Guide approach of this title.

Adhesion and Bonding to Polyolefins

Adhesion and Bonding to Polyolefins

$144

Polyolefins have many and varied applications. Polyethylene is the most widely used plastic and olefinic elastomers, such as natural rubber and styrene-butadiene copolymers, predominate in many key components such as tyres. Many applications of polyolefins require good adhesion to other substrates such as adhesive bonding, lamination, painting, printing and metallisation. However, polyolefins have very poor bonding properties except where a diffusion mechanism operates, such as during the welding together of two pieces of polyolefin. Theories of adhesion are briefly described. This review discusses ways of improving adhesion to substrates. A variety of pretreatments and primers have been developed for altering the surface properties of polyolefins to enhance adhesion. These include corona discharge, flame and low pressure plasma treatment for plastics, and the use of a chlorine donor for elastomers. Each method has advantages and disadvantages, which are discussed in this report. A number of different analytical methods have been used to characterise the surface of polyolefins before and after treatment. These include X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), static secondary ion mass spectrometry (SSIMS) and Fourier transfer infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). These techniques are described and examples of the information obtained are included. Many experiments have been performed globally to investigate ways of improving the bonding of polyolefins. Data from some of the key work on different treatment methods are included, together with a discussion of the effectiveness of the treatments. This overview is written by two of the most prominent researchers in this field. It is clearly written and will be of use to those in industry and academia who are working on adhesion and bonding to polyolefins, both in practical situations and in the laboratory. The extensive reference section contains a unique set of abstracts from the Polymer Library, including papers on the issues of bonding of polyolefin in composites. Key features…; Theories of adhesion; Surface analysis techniques; Pretreatment methods; Data; Discussion. Save 20% when you buy 2 or more titles in the Rapra Review Report Series (Volume 9 onwards).
