There are many types of bird feeders and one popular style is the platform bird feeder. It is the kind of feeder which looks like a tray that is slightly elevated or totally mounted off the ground.

1. Start cutting the wood in sizes such as 16 x 10 inches for the back, 10 x 10 inches for the bottom, 2 x 10 inches for the front, 12 x 12 inches for the roof, and 12 x 10 for the sides.

2. Next is to attach the cut pieces together. Nail, glue or screw the back of the feeder to the bottom feeder. Make sure to do it properly to avoid any accidents.

3. Attaching the sides of the feeder to the back and bottom woods is the next thing to do. You can do this by either using a glue or nails. The roof is the last piece to be attached.

4. Paint your feeder for aesthetic purposes. Since you'll be placing it in your back or front yard, beautifying the feeder is a must to serve as home decoration as well.

5. Place the feeder in your backyard by hanging or slightly elevating it from the ground.

The benefit of using a platform bird feeder is that it is very easy to mange. You can easily fill the feeder with bird seeds and it is very visible to the avian. Since most platform feeders are open, you won't have a hard time scattering the seeds on it. It is also very easy to clean compare to other types of feeders.

The downside of this one is that it can be easily attack by squirrels and other large birds. The seeds can also be easily blown off during windy days which are not a good thing. It can also be a source of illnesses if it is not properly cleaned.

How can I drill into a very hard wall?

I live on the 1st floor of a small block of 1970s flats. The scrim is too hard to get a drawing pin into and nails just bend. When I try to drill into the wall the I have to use all my force. Under the scrim is what I think is concrete. It is grainy and either breaks in chunks or a coarse powder. After about half inch it is impossible to go deeper. Different powered drills and drill bits just make no inroads at all. I cut down rawlplugs and tried gluing them in what hole I had made but they can just be pulled out with my fingers and they take a chunk of the wall with them. I tried gluing batons to the walls with No More Nails and have mounted some pictures but when I tried that trick with some lightweight curtains they just fell down after a couple of weeks. The ceiling is the same. The main window is too big to have a curtain rail that is held up just by a spring if you know what I mean. Any tricks of the trade? I don't know how the previous tenants managed.

The combination of a decent masonry bit and a hammer drill ought to be sufficient, I should think. Some of the 70s breeze blocks can be unbelievably hard compared to get through compared to the modern lightweight things. All I can say is,

1. Use a Masonry Bit - should be a dull grey metal with a pointed metal plate set in the tip.

2. An electric drill with a Hammer setting - a mains drill is generally more powerful than a rechargeable but a rechargeable should be quite sufficient in this case.

3. Don't try and drill too fast. Most electric drills will be variable speed, these days, so you should be able to drop the speed until you can feel the drill bit cutting and try to maintain that optimum speed.

Lintels, above doors and windows, will usually be a lot harder than the surrounding masonry. You'll probably have concrete lintels rather than steel, at least, so the above should still apply.
