How to Judge the Quality of a Foam Board

A foam board is a durable material, similar to Styrofoam in nature that is used in a variety of different ways. It is used primarily in schools as a display unit for projects or in school fairs. They have other uses as well, like being used to make models of buildings or prototypes of new products. Foam boards also serve as a creative outlet for children because they can be cut into so many different types of shapes and sizes, and so can be used to make all sorts of things.

 

Foam poster boards are widely manufactured today because they have so many uses and are easily available everywhere. Feel It

A good quality foam poster board should not feel heavy when you lift it up. Heavy foam boards are difficult to carry and handle, and accidents are more likely with such products. Instead a foam poster board should be light, and have a certain amount of rigidity so that it can resist effects of light pressure.

 

Surface Checks

The third step is to assess how the surface of the foam board feels. If it is uneven, you should reject it, because only those with smooth straight surfaces will give you good results if you use art materials on them. Otherwise every dent will show up conspicuously if you, for example, use a thick crayon to draw or outline anything on the board.

Thick and Thicker

Foam boards come in varying levels of thicknesses. However, foam boards need to be of a certain thickness to work to their optimum. If it is on the thinner side, there is a big chance that when you stick up objects on it with pins, the pin-end will poke out the other side of the board and cause any number of accidents. An ideal thickness for a good foam board is 3/16 of an inch.

 

The Fold Factor

Some foam boards are made specifically to be used for presentations. One feature of such boards is that they are usually foldable, to help with different aspects of the project on display. To check for quality, fold over any foam poster board made for such a purpose. A good one will not measure more than 24 inches in total.

 

Glue

Lastly, check to see if your foam board will resist glue on its surface or cause it to dry up quickly. Since these boards are mostly used in art, there isn't any point to a foam board on which glue doesn't apply properly.
