Treating Rose Disease

Every gardener wants to prevent rose disease from occurring in order to have a garden full of healthy plants. Prevention of diseases is important, as is knowing how to identify problems as soon as they crop up.

Powdery Mildew

The most common disease on rose leaves is powdery mildew, a white powder-like fungus typically found on leaves. When untreated, leaves begin to drop and can cause the plant to weaken. The best prevention is to always water at the base of the plant, directly on the soil, not on plant leaves. 

Excessive moisture creates mildew on foliage.  Mildew can be treated organically with a mixture of 1 tsp. baking soda, a ½ tsp of oil mixed in a quart of warm water. Spray the mixture on affected leaves. Remove all fallen leaves and dispose away from the garden.

Rust

Rust is another common rose disease, a bright orange powder which tends to grown on the underside of leaves. It is best treated early and can also be prevented by keeping foliage dry. Once the rust has been detected removal of infected leaves is the best preventative treatment. You may need to apply chemical fungal sprays to the roses if rust persists. .

Blackspot

Should you find round black spots the size of an eraser tip on rose leaves, you have blackspot. This disease can kill rose plants; remove infected parts of flowers and apply a fungicide if spots continue to appear.

Rose Mosaic

The aforementioned diseases were fungal, rose mosaic is a virus. It shows up as green or yellow spots, which look like mosaics, on leaves. The only treatment is leaf removal.

Canker

Canker, which appears as dark sunken spots on plant canes, is difficult to deal with. It is spread in water when it enters plants through cuts or wounds on stems. Like the mosaic, removal of diseased parts is the only known treatment.

There are precautions which will reduce or eliminate the chance of contracting rose diseases:

• Water should be applied to the soil where it goes directly to roots. Wet leaves develop fungi and other diseases
• Keep plants healthy, well fertilized, and watered. Hardy plants are less likely to become diseased.
• Seal cuts on roses immediately, Elmer's white glue works to help protect the plant when applied to cut area. You can purchase a commercial sealant as well.
• Remove fallen debris and trimmings immediately. Discard them away from gardens. Giving the plant good air circulation helps reduce accumulated moisture.
• Cut off diseased plant areas and prune as suggested.  
• Prune with sharpened and clean pruners. Wipe the blades with rubbing alcohol to prohibit the transmission of diseases.
•  Administer love and care, with a regular watering to create a healthy garden.

Hair tips...?

Me and a couple of my friends are bored tonight (baby hehe), and, on a whim, we want to play with our hair... well, we just cut our friend's bangs, and now we wanna play with dreads and liberty spikes. However, we have like no supplies (only a dabble of gel, which typically doesn't work with these styles), and I don't think we even have any Elmer's glue. My dad refuses to let me use hair glue for some reason.
So, anyway, does anybody know any recipes comprising of typical household items or whatever with which to sculpt these 'do's?

Homemade gel:

1/2 to 1 teaspoon unflavored gelatin
1 cup warm water
Dissolve gelatin in 1 cup warm water. Keep refrigerated and use as you would a purchased gel.

You can use flavored gelatin but it may turn your hair colors for awhile. Maybe if you have lemon it won't show up in your hair.
