what kind of adhesive dots [glue] should i use on fabric?

when sewing, I sometimes need to keep to keep a piece of fabric in place but can not use a pin. is there a kind of glue 'dot' that can be used that will:
keep the fabric in place
stick fabric to fabric
stick fabric to wood or plastic
will not stain the fabric
is removable
is reusable at least a few times
is cheap

Here's a couple of possibilities, assuming you won't be heating your project while these are in use (heat sets many kinds of adhesives).
There are temporary fabric glue sticks that wash out (as well as ones that don't, so be sure which you're getting) - a lot of quilters use them when doing paper piecing or applique work (quilters are usually fairly picky about what they use on their fabric). The safest place to get them is a quilt shop, but many craft stores carry them, too. They're inexpensive, easy to use, non-staining, and will stick to fabric or wood (not sure about plastic, but it might). It may or may not be re-usable, but it's easy and cheap to put another dab of glue on. They should be washed out when your project is done.
Another thing a lot of quilters use is blue painter's tape. It's just a few dollars for a big roll, and it's non-staining as long as it's not left on for more than a few hours at a time. You will probably be able to use a piece a second time, but it's 'low-tack' tape by design, and the 'sticky' wears out quickly.
There are probably other types of adhesives that would work well but I've had years of personal experience with these and I'm comfortable recommending them.
