This can be seen in furniture of the ancient Egyptians, as well as pieces that were built by craftsmen renaissance European. While the need for glue in the furniture has not changed over the years, modern technology has created a series of specialty adhesive each designed for a specific purpose.

What the heck is skin glue?

Some of the first adhesives used were called hide glue. Hide glue is made from animal products and is extremely useful for difficult joints or areas that may need to be dismantled. Because skin glue will release its obligations when introduced to heat and humidity, it is perfect for separating parts without damaging them. Because hide glue that hardens slowly, it is also the right to use glue on the areas that require much time to assemble. The problem with glue skin is that it is affected by heat and humidity, two elements that you want your furniture to resist. Thank you to modern technology, there are other options available to us.

What epoxy and polyurethane adhesive?

Among the most durable forms of glue available, two-part epoxy is at the top of the list. If you are looking for the most resistant adhesive water available, epoxy is the best choice. There are however several problems associated with two part epoxy. The first problem is that it is messy to use. You must ensure that both sides are evenly mixed before application. Then you must apply your hardware. This is far less convenient than using an adhesive right on one bottle. The second problem is that epoxy is toxic. Make sure that you wear gloves and a respirator to protect against chemical exposure. Because of these issues, epoxy is not the best choice for everyday use.

One of the new options available to woodworkers is a polyurethane glue, which is expected to be adapted to any application of bonding. The strange feature of this type of glue is it really cures when exposed to moisture. This makes perfect for use on items that require maximum resistance to water. As drying polyurethane glue, it actually develops. Although This will allow a very strong joint, the glue will expand outside of the joint and the surface of your product. This will require Extra sanding, but you get a nice, solid joint.

When using white or yellow glue?

White and yellow glue, as they are commonly called, are actually vinyl acetate adhesives. White glue is usually a good adhesive to use on most porous materials, while the yellow glue is designed to be used for indoor projects. These types of glue were not designed for a strong bond with water, do not use them for outside projects. However, there are types of specially formulated glue that yellow designed for water resistance. This type of glue can cure by a chemical reaction and not evaporation.

The best choice for beginners woodworking is a yellow glue, also known as aliphatic resin glue. This glue is easy to use, is nontoxic and cleans up with water. It is also easy to sand, will not be "cluttering" your sandpaper with residues of leaves and almost invisible glue line. Like all adhesives, there is a lifespan of about a year. Do not use this type of glue if it starts to smell sour or becomes thick or stringy. This means that the glue is more sound and should be disposed of properly.
