Eco-friendly Materials for your New Home

     Eco-friendly homes possess green and nature-friendly materials.  In environmental terms, green is synonymous to sustainable. You can also opt to use silk, wool or cotton colored in vegetable dyes. Make sure you use natural fiber under them. You can also try using natural cook, it helps insulate and warms the underfoot. Alternatively, you can use bamboo; it is beautiful to look at and at the same time sustainable and renewable. If you choose the look of hardwood, try to use reclaimed lumber, smart wood or FSC approved hardwood. Use non-toxic sealants on the floorings.

COUNTERTOPS:  Several beautiful options for you include marmoleums and maples. You can also use concrete that has a thirty-percent fly ash content, which helps in lowering the production energy. Try using stainless steel made of recycled material. If you prefer on using quarried or natural stone such as slate, marble or granite, be sure to refrain from using varnishes and sealants containing PVC. Use wood or laminate your countertops to make it appear as good as new.

CABINETS:  Avoid using the traditional MDF wood; instead use solid wood from sustainably managed forests or plywood that has flour-based glues that contain low VOC adhesives.

PAINT: Look for paints that have a green label seal or choose those with low VOC options. Oil paints are better than the standard latex paints because they become zero VOC after three days. If you are serious on zero emissions, look for recycled paint or use milk paints and add your pigment. Low odor paints are becoming very popular in eco-friendly homes.

UPHOLSTERY AND FABRICS:  Use natural fabrics like linen, cotton, silk, wool and even bamboo fibers. Since most cotton and linen grower uses pesticides, organic is the best choice. It is an added bonus if you could find products that are naturally sun bleached.

     Energy efficient materials are common to most consumers today. Proper insulation, efficient heating and air systems and storm windows are popular ways to keep utility bills in check. Sustainable building materials are low toxic or non-toxic and have minimal chemical emissions. Green materials are believed to increase the quality of health in the home environment and helps in energy conservation.

     No doubt about it, everybody wants to be responsible in conserving the environment. Nevertheless, going green can be a bit overwhelming. You need not save the world right away; a little bit goes a long way in creating a healthier environment. Start at your very home. Going green in your home does not mean a break in your budget. Toilet flange over concrete questions?

I am putting a bathroom in my basement and have a couple questions about setting the toilet flange. The floor is concrete and the plumber left a 4 inch pvc pipe where the toilet will go.

1) I plan on putting a tile floor in the bathroom. My first question is, can I cut off the pvc flush with the concrete floor and set the flange in it? I have the type that glues inside the 4" pvc. That would mean the outer edge of the flange would sit on top of the concrete. By my estimation, after the tile is laid, the flange would still be about 1/8 - 1/4 " above the tile. Will this work?

2) Do I need to screw the flange into the concrete floor? If so, how far would the pvc pipe go into the concrete before it angles to go to the main sewer line? Would I need to worry about screwing into the concrete and hitting the pipe below?

sounds like everything will work out just fine...... here are a few tips.....cut the pipe as low as possible.. get the flange and the glue.. align the flange so the slots for the bolts are in the right place....then glue it push str8 down and hold it a few seconds.. dont try twisting the flange after u glue it! give it a few minutes then grab it and see if it wiggles? if it dont hen u wont need any screws .. if it is really really lose u will need a screw.......then just tile up to it .... once the tile is done save about a quart of grout.. then put the bolts in the slots..then wax ring on flange...them mix up some of that grout an put it on the floor around the flange smear it all around it will clean up fine...then grab the bowl..just the bowl no seat and no tank..grab the bowl and look down thru the seat mounting holes to line up the bolts and squish it down...snug up the nuts and bolts....then install tank and connect to water supply turn on water flush toilet ...grab a sponge wipe up grout around bowl.. all big pieces go in trash..the final wipes can use bowl as sink....once the grout hardens cut the bolts install the caps..then the seat
