525i no heat and coolant level warning, but coolant is full?

I just bought a nice 95 BMW 525i. I love it but can't figure out why there is not a bit of heat. When I start it the dashboard warning system says "coolant level" and "owners manual." But the coolant level is fine. I can't tell if the coolant is circulating, but it seems like the water pump must be fine, otherwise it would overheat. The temp gauge stays glued to the halfway mark. Anyone have any suggestions?

You have two separate faults.

The coolant level sensor is bad. They fail all the time. Get a new one.

No heat could be several problems.

Does any air come out of the vents? If not is the fan running? No fan -- Bad blower motor final stage.
Fan runs, no air --> Clogged microfilter.

Lots of cold air? The first thing I'd check is the boost pump. There is an electric pump that circulates water up to the heater radiator. If that appears to be working, then the valves aren't opening on the heater radiator. There are two separate valves, one for each side. Look for a bad ground or a blown fuse.
