Removing Tint

All window tints deteriorate with age and have to be changed after a period of time. There are two methods of removing polyester based tint that are commonly used. These methods are steam method and undiluted ammonia with help from the sun. 

Sun and Undiluted Ammonia Method: To remove tint, using this method, one will need to have the following materials: A glass cleaner, sun, fine steel wool, razor blades, paper towels, undiluted ammonia and tarp. The tint film is made of two layers of tinted polyester, this makes it difficult to peel it off the window since the second is left behind. The second layer does not peel off, it flakes or tears. 

Cut the plastic bags in the shape of the window then spray soapy water on the outside of the window and smooth it flat. Protect all inside surfaces near the window, speakers, upholstered surfaces, rear lights. Spray the inside with undiluted ammonia, it advisable and recommended to wear a facemask or hold one’s breathe since ammonia fumes are harmful. While ammonia is still wet, trap it using the other plastic bag. Park the vehicle with the appropriate window facing the sun so as to let the plastic bags absorb heat. Leave the vehicle for about an hour so as to let the tints adhesive to soften, if not sunny or to accelerate the process one can use a hair drier but this will require extra moisture. Using a razor blade or finger nails lift the tint in a corner of the window and try to peel off the entire piece of tint. If any piece is left behind a razor blade can be used to scrape it off. Any residual adhesive left behind can be removed using ammonia and very fine steel wool, after wards remove the exterior plastic bag and clean the window thoroughly using a glass cleaner. 

Steam Method: In this method one will be required to have the following: long extension cord, cheap clothing steamer, water in a container, glass cleaner and rags. The clothing steamer is the most important material. Remove any stickers on the window and then plug in the extension cord from the house for the steamer. Fill the steamer with water and plug it in and wait for the steamer to get hot, it takes only a few seconds to become hot. Open a window before steaming to let the steam out. Look closely at the corners of the window for the edge of the tint; steaming should start from where that edge is. While steaming the mold will become wet but this should not be of any alarm since one can use the other hand to wipe off the water. At every position the steamer should be held for about1 to 2 minutes, make sure to keep steaming and picking until there is enough tint that one can pull with their fingers. Fold the tint that has been pulled off to avoid it from sticking back, after the whole sheet is off steam the whole window to see if any glue was left behind. Wipe the window and molding and clean the window using a window cleaner.

What kind of glue works on the ubiquitous blue tarps? I cut them to more useful sizes, then duct tape the seams. But if I knew how to glue them, I'd have many more options. I've tried a few glues, but nothing works yet. Thanks very much!
