Can I lay tile over advhesive on a cement floor?

I have stripped my cement floor ,that is ground level, bare all except for the thin layer of adhesive that was laid in 1964 to hold the vinyl tiles. I don't know how to get it up or if it really matters. Wanting to lay porcelin tile directly to the concrete.

In1964 vinyl tile was often installed using a black adhesive called cutback. It was a alcohol, asbestos, tar mixture. It can be a problem for almost all flooring that is glued down. Here is a link for some information. http://www.johnbridge.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=44642
