Making an Interesting activity out of Paper Doll Chains

Making a paper doll chain is a perfect activity for dads and children on a sleepy afternoon. It is simple and does not require either time or money. Most importantly, it will be an exercise in creativity that the children will surely enjoy.

Things you will need:

* Some cardboard or hard paper

* A pair of scissors

* Pen, crayons, markers, and color pencils

* Glue

* Colorful paper or fabric scraps, buttons, beads, ribbons, sequins, and stickers to decorate the dolls

Steps to make the doll chain:

* Cut out a broad strip of the cardboard or paper. This could be about 10 cm high and as long as you want to make your doll chain.

* Fold about 6 cm of one end of the strip. At the point where the folded end overlaps, fold the strip again, but in the other direction. Go on making similar, alternating folds, so that the entire strip is folded into accordion style panels.

* Hold the folded panels bunched up tightly, with the top panel facing you. Help your children to draw the outline of a doll on this top panel, with the hands and legs spread out so that these extend to the panel borders.

* Carefully cut around the doll, taking care to retain the folds where the hands and legs touch the borders.

* Now unfold the strip to see your chain of dolls, joined by their hands and legs.

* Let your children decorate the dolls using the crayons, markers, color pencils, pieces of fabric, beads, ribbons, etc.

* You can even help your kids cut out little shapes from fabric scraps that they can use to create colorful dresses for the dolls.

You can use this chain to decorate the walls of your living room. You could even stick it around a lampshade, hang it as a mobile, or use it to decorate your child's door.

Money,or School supplies in need of free pens, pencils, crayons, markers, erasers, writing tablets, paper, sharpies, glue, construction paper, scissors, paperclips, staplers, staples, white out, highlighters, erasers, folders, books etc

There are so many people running scams that you may find it extremely difficult to get anything donated. A good option for raising funds is to run a "fair" or to do a sale - and profits are going to be small.

I have been in charge of collecting donations on 3 occasions over the past year...

The first was for a community service charity - several families had been displaced after a string of arsons and, thanks to Katrina, the Red Cross was "dry". I was able to collect money and personal items for the families by going door to door. Since the event had made local news, I had the backing of a local charity, and most of the people asked lived close to the events, people were willing to give. Most gave items; soap, toothpaste, food, etc and a few gave $. (We raised $51 & a car load full of supplies having knocked on about 300 doors.)

The second event was for a community/character development youth group I have been leading. Despite having plenty of information, benefiting local youth, and the group being a certified chapter of a national organization... we had very little positive response. We obtained permission to use a meeting room, $20 from a family member, and a free advertisement.

The third was in support of a school fall festival. I was able to obtain enough support to cover the prizes for our booth. Only 1 place was willing to provide any financial support - in the form of a gift card. All donations for booth prizes were stuff the stores were already going to give away; coupons, left over from their promotions, free sample CDs, and a few aprons.

As I stated before... there have been so many people running scams that it is difficult for the legitimate groups to get any support. Many places simply do not participate because they are large national companies and they can't pick and choose so they just opt out.

You will need verification that you are a representative of the specific group you are collecting for. Some benefactors will want to double check your documentation before providing any support. Others will require documentation to insure the money/donation was given to and used by the group they intended it for (this is for tax purposes). Most will require a letter written identifying who the donation is for, how it will be used, etc.

Also, you have to look into local laws regarding donation collection. Some places have laws against door to door solicitation & many stores have similar restrictions. Even leaving a collection box or a candy box can be a challenge.

The vast majority of your finances are going to come from the participants. Who are you raising funds/collecting supplies for anyway???
