Three main types of ink are used in today's inkjet printers: Solvent, water, and oil based. Oil based inks had a fairly brief career and have now generally been dropped in favour of solvent based inks

There are three main types of ink used in inkjet printers: Solvent, water, and oil based.

Water-based inks: Water-based or Aqueous/thermal inks are divided into two categories, Pigmented Inks and Dye inks.

Dye inks are formulated with the tiny molecules carrying the colour property suspended in a water-based carrier solution. They have a high colour brilliance and a wide gamut of colour. However the ability to resist light isn?t good and they are subject to damage by water once printed onto the substrate. Because the colour is held in solution the size of the colour carrying element is minute and therefore is more tolerant of the make up of the paper it is being printed onto and also tends to dry faster.

Pigmented Inks.

Particles of pigment are held in suspension in a water-based carrier liquid. These particles of pigment have a vastly greater size that the smaller than microscopic molecules dissolved in solution utilized in dye based inks. They are very resistant to fading and the effects ofwater damage and can even be used outside for a limited time. As the pigments have a much bulkier make up the substrate needs to be coated, or be more porous to allow the ink to adhere and dry effectively.

Solvent-based Inks.

Inks in this category can be broken down into 2 groups that are referred to in a number of different ways including: soft, mild, safe, eco, and green as well as hard, real, true, and strong. The term 'eco' is usually attached to products that are in harmony with the environment; however, in the context of solvent inks which utilise chemicals derived from oil, this tag must be treated with a large amount of skepticism. The agressive solvents are able to produce acceptable results on a wide range of medias - generally at a cheaper cost as the media does not need coating as with the milder solvent inks.

Both types of solvent ink uses a fine powder pigment which is dissolved into a solvent carrier fluid combined with a resin or glue. Once the ink is on the surface, the solvent evaporates off (usually with an unpleasant odour filling the room) and the adhesive sticks the pigment particle to the surface.

Piezo print heads spray the ink onto the print surface creating a fast print speed with extremely accurate dot placement and long head lifespan.

Unlike water based inks where the substrate needs to be coated with an ink-receptive layer the solvent process can produce prints suitable for exterior use on non-absorbent, uncoated materials such as self-adhesive vinyl and scrim banner fabrics, pvc and polyester.

Prints produced in this way are far more resilient to fading and scratching.

The Mild Solvent Inks use slow drying carrier fluids and so printers that utilise this type of ink usually have heaters to dry the ink as it is printed.

Agressive solvents dry faster and have the added benefit of softening the substrate surface creating a stronger bond.

Is cascamite a suitable alternative for epoxy?

Hi I am building a small plywood dinghy (6mm) and would like to know if cascamite powdered resin wood glue is a suitable alternative instead of west system epoxy when using a butt block or scarf joint on hull? Anyone any ideas on this please?

'Cascamite' is a 'waterproof' (WP) urea formaldehyde adhesive, and is suitable only for interior bonds. Not for continuous immersion.

For hull construction a 'weather, boil-proof' (WBP) adhesive is specified.

The technical 'trademark' equivalent adhesive to epoxy resin in the formaldehyde range would be 'Cascophen': A resorcinol formaldehyde: A 'weather, boil-proof' (WBP) adhesive.

The former is suitable for interior joinery, the latter in hull construction.

So to answer the question, no. Cascamite is not a suitable adhesive for construction. Even for a dinghy.

Epoxy resin is also a WBP adhesive and so, is comparable with resorcinol formaldehyde.

Note. When considering the comparative technical merits of resorcinol formaldehyde resins and epoxy resins, two main issues apply. (Note: Technical merits, not economic):

Firstly, with RF resins, the finer the glue-line, the stronger the joint. So, a 'hairline' or 'invisible' glue-line is strongest.

By contrast, epoxies exhibit comparably similar bond-strengths at up to 6 millimeters of glue-line thickness: They are so-called 'gap-filling' adhesives, given correct usage.¹ Although, they are more-or-less equally strong given hairline accuracy at the joint, also.

And second, 'pot life'.

The two resins present polar opposites.

Having mixed the active components, the pot life will be greatly extended for resorcinol formaldehyde while kept in the pot - in the mixing container.² Whereas for the epoxy it is the opposite and the pot life will be greatest if, having first mixed the components in the pot, the resulting material is then spread out (for example, onto a pallet board).

The reason being that while the RF resins, in addition to chemical curing are receptive also to 'air' curing, the epoxies, by contrast, rely (also in addition to chemical curing) on 'exothermic reaction': The chemical action of creating heat, implicated in the cure, which is therefore most effectively dissipated, given a large surface-area crucially, while working. And thus extending pot life (working time).

And you will be very well advised that in boatbuilding you often need as much time as you can get from your resin mix in which to also perform the sometimes quite numerous tasks involved in assembly, fastening and clamping of the intended structure.

Hairline (fine) glue lines are or course essential for decorative or other visible work, and are of equal strength given the choice of either epoxy or resorcinol. But the important point to also bear in mind is that if you are considering using the resorcinol resins then you must be confident that your woodwork skills are sufficient to ensure that at all times in the preparation of joint surfaces and accuracy, that they are of high quality.

In summary: Urea formaldehyde (WP: waterproof adhesive - 'Cascamite') is not suitable for hull construction. For this, the comparison you must make is between WBP: 'weather, boil-proof' adhesives - epoxy resins (eg, 'WEST' / SPS etc.) and resorcinol formaldehyde ('Cascophen') resins.

Both are WBP: weather, boil-proof adhesives. And, given the appropriate skills, are equals for joinery purposes.

Epoxies require skills and knowledge that relate more to the large range of materials and product solutions available, and therefore have an extraordinary range of application. While resorcinol formaldehydes require a high degree of woodworking accuracy. And are limited to joinery. (Scarfs, laminating and other 'fine' work, etc.)

² With the point being that, assembly must be very soon indeed following application of the resin as, once applied to the joint surfaces it rapidly begins to cure. The joint surfaces must be united with haste.
