Tissue paper

Coloured tissue paper is a lightweight paper that can be made from both virgin and recycled paper pulp.

Tissue paper is used to make a huge range of products with a wide range of different properties. Some of the key properties are strength, absorbency, basis weight, thickness, brightness, stretch, appearance.

Tissue paper is produced on a paper machine that has a single large steam heated drying cylinder called a yankee dryer that is fitted with a hot air hood. The raw material is paper pulp and is sprayed with adhesives inside the yankee cylinder to make the paper stick. Creping is done by the yankee's doctor blade that is scraping the dry paper off the cylinder surface. The crinkle is controlled by the strength of the adhesive, geometry of the doctor blade, speed difference between the yankee and final section of the paper machine and paper pulp characteristics.

The properties are controlled by pulp quality and additives both in base paper and as coating.

Wrapping tissue is a translucent, thin tissue paper used for wrapping and cushioning items.

White tissue paper is commonly sold specifically for bulk wrapping in reams of 480 sheets. Some shops wrap delicate merchandise in folded or crumpled layers of tissue paper to protect it before placing it in bags or boxes for the purchaser.

Coloured wrapping tissue paper can be used for an assortment of visually creative purposes. For example tissue paper can be crumpled up to form objects, such as flowers.

Tissue paper was used by musicians in the early 1900s to play the comb, producing a sound similar to the kazoo. Jazz musician Red McKenzie was one of the best-known players.

The production of tissue paper for wrapping is made by the machine glaze process. A slurry of fiber is placed on a forming wire where the water is allowed to drain away. The sheet is then pressed against a felt and pressed against a drying cylinder for the final drying step. The sheet is then pulled away from the dryer and wound up ready for further converting into wrapping paper.

Kids' Craft; Sand & Glue?

Project Instructions: "Spray heavy paper with spray adhesive, sprinkle with sand, then use Q-Tip to write message in sand."

The above instructions do not work very well. Spray adhesive dries too fast, so doesn't allow time for the kids to write a message.

It's for Bible class (4th & 5th graders), & the theme of the lesson is that God's Word is written in stone. So the result of the project is supposed to be that the paper will end up looking like a stone with a message written or chiseled in to it.

I thought about using liquid starch instead of spray adhesive or any other kind of glue, & using butcher paper (it has a slicker not so pourous side) instead of heavy paper. But maybe someone else has a better idea. Can anyone help me?

you can always try and find sand colored clay and flatten it out with rolling pins on the slicker side of the butcher paper and use tooth-picks or kabob sticks or even a pencil to write in it and then just let it dry out. it is a little less messy then glue and sand.
