Building A Plywood Boat

Plywood is one of the easiest materials anyone can use to build a boat. Thus, for this reason, it is the material of choice for many beginners in boat building. And what's best with this material is for the simplest boat designs, you don't need sophisticated tools to learn how to build a plywood boat.

However, just with any projects, you have to go over some requirements and things to consider to build a plywood boats that's to your own specification.

Some things you have to keep in mind are:

BUDGET

Plywood is the material of choice even for those who are adept at building boats for the simple reason that it is also the cheapest. With the right finishing and maintenance, it is also quite long lasting and very low maintenance.

But, to get the full value for your money, you have to set a definite budget that you are comfortable spending This is, after all, one of the advantages of building your own boat. It's your boat, the budget as well as the customization of the boat is all up to you.

BUILDING PROCESS

There are method to get around building a plywood boat. One method is called ply over frame. In this method of boat building, you will be required to build a boat frame beforehand over which the plywood has to be glued to.

Another method is the most easiest I've ever come across in boat building. It is called stitch and glue. This method would involve cutting the plywood to shape as specified on the boat plan and assembling the boat parts by stitching and gluing all the parts together. A copper wire is generally used to stitch the parts together while an epoxy is used to glue along the seams. The seam is typically covered with strips of fiberglass coated with resin.

Of course there are several other methods you can employ, however, these two are the easiest method to build a plywood boat.

DESIGN

The design of the boat should be compatible with how you will use it for as well as the level of your skills in woodworking. Whether you choose simpler design or the more outfitted ones, you need to work with a very good boat building plans to guide you on the whole process of building a boat of a specific design.

Another good thing with having a boat building plan is you exactly know what to do next so you do away with mistakes and frustrations that's usually associated with building your own boat.
