A splinter is a little shaving of wood or metal that we have all experienced under our skin. Usually, it hurts quite a bit also! Below you will find some hints to aid in removing the splinter on your own.
Keep pressure off of it. When trying to get rid of a splinter, never put pressure on the area. By doing this you'll just shove the fragment further into your skin, making it harder to take away. You shouldn't naively think that you can simply squeeze it out manually. What will probably happen is that the splinter will fragment into smaller bits causing no end of problems.
Give baking soda a shot. A good technique for getting out splinters is by using baking soda. Create a paste out of baking soda, using ¼ teaspoon of baking soda and enough water to make the paste. After putting paste on the splintered area, cover it with a bandage. Leaving a splinter overnight should allow it time to work itself out to be easily removable in the morning. (This method is best when dealing with nearly invisible splinters.)
Now you will need tape. Tape has been known to remove splinters if all else fails. You will need to use the stickiest tape you can find. It can be any sort of tape. Remove a small section and place the adhesive layer over the splinter. Here too, you need to go lightly to avoid an excess of pressure while performing this. Once the splinter is secured to the tape, quickly yank the tape in the opposite direction of the splinter's entrance angle. The splinter should come out attached to the tape, although it may take a few tries for this splinter removal method to work.
Use a pair of tweezers. Most people use tweezers to remove splinters. See which direction the splinter has entered your skin. Make sure the splinter comes out the same way it went in by pulling on it with the tweezers. For smaller splinters, try using a magnifying glass.
A needle works well here also. We probably all have not-so-fond memories of our mothers removing splinters with a pin or needle. Even though the method is old and slightly painful, it still works to this day. Find the area where the splinter is located and use a needle to open up the skin. Get of the splinter with your finger, once you pull out enough of it.
